Power Play: how the multiplier works
Power Play is a $1-per-play add-on that multiplies every non-jackpot prize. A 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x multiplier is drawn for every Powerball drawing. The 10x multiplier is only added to the pool when the advertised jackpot is at or below $150 million.
The Match-5 prize ($1,000,000) has a special rule: with Power Play, it is fixed at $2 million regardless of which multiplier is drawn. Every other non-jackpot tier is multiplied by the drawn number. The jackpot itself is never multiplied.

How Powerball prizes are taxed
Prizes of $5,000 or less are paid in cash by retailers with no federal withholding, but you must still report them as ordinary income on Form 1040 Schedule 1. Prizes between $5,001 and $599,999 require a claims-centre form and trigger 24% federal withholding. Jackpot and $1M Match-5 prizes also push the winner into the 37% top marginal bracket, leaving roughly 13% more owed at filing time.

Frequently asked questions
What are the odds of winning a Powerball prize?
The odds of winning any Powerball prize are about 1 in 24.87. The jackpot itself is the rarest tier at 1 in 292,201,338. The $4 "Powerball only" tier is the most common winning ticket at 1 in 38, and the second-most common is the $4 "one white plus Powerball" tier at 1 in 92.
What is the smallest Powerball prize?
The smallest Powerball prize is $4, won by matching just the red Powerball number (1 in 38 odds) or by matching one white ball plus the Powerball (1 in 92). Matching one white ball alone, or any number of white balls without the Powerball below three, wins nothing.
Does Power Play multiply the jackpot?
No. Power Play never multiplies the Powerball jackpot. It multiplies every other non-jackpot prize by the drawn multiplier (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x), with one exception: the Match-5 $1,000,000 prize is locked at a flat $2,000,000 with Power Play, regardless of which multiplier is drawn.
When is the 10x Power Play multiplier available?
The 10x Power Play multiplier is only in the multiplier pool when the advertised Powerball jackpot is at or below $150 million. Once the jackpot grows above $150 million, the multiplier pool drops back to 2x, 3x, 4x, and 5x only.
Are Powerball prizes the same in every state?
Yes. The prize amounts and odds listed in the Powerball prize chart are identical across all participating jurisdictions because Powerball is operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). State and federal tax treatment is the only state-by-state variable that affects take-home.
Do I need to claim a small Powerball prize at the lottery office?
Prizes of $599 or less can be paid in cash by any Powerball retailer in the state where the ticket was purchased. Prizes from $600 up to $5,000 typically require a claim form but trigger no federal withholding. Anything above $5,000 is paid at a state lottery claims centre with 24% federal withholding deducted at source.
